Context

In Burnaby, British Columbia (BC), there is a high percentage of English language learners (ELLs) who come from all over the world. With such a diverse range of learners and language needs, the district has strived to create responsive programming to meet the needs of ELLs. In secondary schools, this has meant the development of language adapted English (LAE) and language adapted social studies 10 (LASS) courses that are meant to transition or bridge high intermediate or advanced ELLs from sheltered ELL classes to mainstream courses through which they can gain credit towards high school graduation. Students in this class range from Grade 10 -12 and are all at an ELL level of 3 or 4. The Burnaby School District has a 4 level ELL program with 1 being beginner and 4 being advanced.

The BC Ministry of Education has been working towards redesigning the K-12 curriculum and as such, the Burnaby school district has had to update and redesign their LAE and LASS 10 courses. The redesigned LAE 10 course, the focus of this website, meets the learning outcomes prescribed by the Ministry of Education while also scaffolding the necessary language skills for ELLs to achieve success.
