GENRE-BASED WRITING INSTRUCTION

joint construction.jpg

The best way to approach a new genre is through the joint construction of text model.

Building background

The first step is to build familiarity with a text genre. As a class, read multiple examples of one text type.

Text deconstruction

As you read, encourage students to consider what similarities they are noticing of the language and organizational features of each example.

Then, guide students through key features of text for that genre.

Joint construction of text

Next, have students create text with a partner or as a whole class. First, start with the writing outline, and have students write drafts. Then encourage peer editing with another partner pair before having students write a final draft.

Suggested – have the teacher provide formative feedback throughout this process.

Independent construction of text

Have students write independently. Time permitting, encourage multiple drafts before the final assessment to allow students to build their confidence and skills.
